Jordan Times, 22 maart: Online matchmaking services gain popularity. Dana, an executive secretary, muslim, said she meets many eligible men at the hotel where she works, but she is not looking for a short-term relationship or any physical contact before marriage and can never really know if someone she meets has honourable intentions.
“I am still open to meet people who approach my family first, but so far, the men who have come to my home have been all wrong for me and I don’t mind trying something else.”
According to Hammam Saeed, director of the Sunnah Centre in Amman, searching for a wife or husband is encouraged in Islam under sharia, but it is important that Internet sites are monitored closely to ensure users are persons of principle and are abiding by the teachings of Islam. He pointed out that the marriage sites should not accept any photos that are not Islamic.
In a Washington Post article posted on Zawaj.com, its founder Wael Abdelgawad told the paper that the site is very much in tune with Muslim culture because the Internet conversations put the emphasis on a love interest’s personality and mind, rather than on his or her looks. “It’s not about falling in love; it’s about meeting someone who is compatible and has the same goals in life and then getting married. Love grows… the whole concept of falling in love and the romantic whirlwind, it’s a Western concept and it’s a concept that doesn’t necessarily exist in the Muslim world,” Abdelgawad, said in the article.
